Margin

The space outside the live area of a page, which is structure rather than leftover: it is what stops a reader's thumb from sitting on the text.

Margin: the first page of Jenson's Eusebius, Venice 1470, the text block set high and toward the spine, with the outer and foot margins the widest, the page's structure and not what was left over.
The first page of Jenson's Eusebius, 1470, Nicolas Jenson, printer.
Public domainPublic domain: Printed in Venice in 1470; Jenson died in 1480, and the page is out of copyright everywhere; Commons tags the file public domain, and this house reads a faithful scan of a flat public-domain page as carrying no new copyright.
The whole page, scaled to 1280 px wide. Retrieved 2026-09-10.
Margin: a drawn diagram with the margin marked in vermilion.
