Modular scale
Also called Type scale
A set of sizes generated by one ratio rather than chosen individually, so that every size on a page is related to every other by arithmetic instead of by taste.

| a base | the size the rest of the ramp is built from | |
| a ratio | the number each step is multiplied by | |
| measured on our own site, and it is NOT a modular scale | the ramp is --t5 1rem, --t4 1.5rem, --t3 2rem, then --t2 clamp(2rem,3.6vw,3rem) and --t1 clamp(3rem,7.6vw,8rem). The three fixed steps go 1 to 1.5 to 2, which is a ratio of 1.5 and then 1.333: two different ratios, so no single number generates the ramp | measured on ink.css, which is the whole of this site's CSS. The two largest steps are not fixed sizes at all but clamps, so they have no ratio to the ones below them at any given viewport. Said plainly rather than rounded into a claim: this house ships a type ramp, not a modular scale |
